Every now and again, a brand will debut an ad that’s enjoyable in its own right. This year, Jeep® released its “Groundhog Day” spot, which pays homage to the classic 1993 film. Like the movie of the same name, the “Groundhog Day” commercial features Bill Murray as Phil Connors, while he drives through the small town of Punxsutawney, dismayed that he’s reliving the same day yet again. Things change, however, when he spots a Jeep® Gladiator, which allows him to go on several adventures.
The spot was an instant favorite and became one of the highest-ranked of 62 commercials released at the same time, according to the annual USA Today Ad Meter. A week after it aired, it had already gotten 104,246,754 views across Jeep®’s social media channels. The popularity of this spot is a clear indicator that the Emmy nomination for this commercial was well deserved.
